San Diego Winery Earns High Honors at International Competition
Recently voted Best Winery in San Diego, Gianni Buonomo Vintners was awarded a Double Gold Medal for their signature 2014 super Tuscan-style Sangiovese. They were then honored with Gold Medals for their 2015 Maestrale (a Bordeaux-style blend) and their 2015 Charbono.
Gianni Buonomo winemaker Keith Rolle had some trepidation about entering his robust, full-bodied wines into a competition in a region traditionally known for more of a cool weather, lighter style wine.
“Cornell University plays a big role helping to develop cold weather wines in the New York Finger Lakes region. It’s typically a lighter style of wine that’s produced up there. I suspected that there could possibly be some regional bias in the judging, but I entered my wines anyway. ”
Judging bias was not the case at this renowned international competition.
Bob Madill, the competition’s head judge and industry liaison for the Finger Lakes Wine Alliance explained who judged the competition.
“We had one of the most diverse panels of judges ever for an international wine competition. Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers, and the top internationally certified wine judges from around the world converged to evaluate over 3000 wines in two days of blind judging.”
Along with their Double Gold and two Gold Medals, Gianni Buonomo Vintners also took home Silver Medals for their 2014 Avennio ( a Rhone-style blend) and their 2014 Blaufränkisch.
Gianni Buonomo Vintners is helping to put San Diego in the spotlight on the international wine making stage.
