CharbonoFest 2018 – Celebration of Double Gold Medal
Release Party for 2015 Charbono
San Diego CA – April 9, 2018 – In a state where Cabernet is king, the nearly extinct Charbono is taking center stage at CharbonoFest at Gianni Buonomo Vintners in the San Diego coastal community of Ocean Beach. The 2014 Charbono recently received a Double Gold medal in the 2018 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. A major celebration has been scheduled.
Once a darling of the Napa Valley, Charbono is now grown on less than 70 acres in California and there are only 17 wineries producing it in the US. This boutique urban winery was able to source a few tons of the rare varietal in Placerville CA and bring them to San Diego for vinification, barrel aging and bottling. The rest is history.
“I don’t enter my wines in competitions, but this wine was really exceptional, and I wanted it evaluated by experts. So, I entered it in the big San Fran Competition. I had high expectations, but not that high. I was floored when I learned we won a Double Gold. This is a great reason to celebrate,” stated Winemaker Keith Rolle.
Rolle is pairing his Charbono with Santa Maria Tri-Tip prepared onsite by champion grill master Jerman Ruiz. “Red oak charcoal is one of the secrets of doing a proper Santa Maria-style roast,” explained Ruiz. The dinner will also feature grilled organic vegetables, cheeses and dessert. (Chicken will be available for those who don’t eat red meat.)
The new release 2015 Charbono is a delight. Deep ruby in color, it delivers a bold, rustic and dusty essence of ripe black cherry with a delicate sweetness of lightly toasted oak. An enduring, silky-soft finish pleases everyone who loves a great glass of well-made red.
