Gianni Buonomo Vintners Voted Best San Diego Winery

April 15, 2019 -San Diego CA – Voted Best Local Winery in San Diego, Gianni Buonomo Vintners continues to revel in it’s time in the spotlight.

The voting took place in the 2019 San Diego Magazine Reader’s Poll.  San Diego Magazine is the city’s most prominent and longest running lifestyle magazine.

It was just last August when this same boutique Ocean Beach winery was named Best Urban Winery in San Diego.

“With over 100 wineries in the region, I’m humbled to receive all this recognition in only our fourth year of operation,” says winemaker/owner Keith Rolle. “The San Diego wine scene is thriving right now and we’re just excited to help bolster its growth. Of course, being named Best Winery is a major plus.”

The main thing that sets Gianni Buonomo Vintners apart from the other local wineries is the source of their grapes. Rolle, who studied Enology and Viticulture in Washington state, brings in grapes from the Pacific Northwest and vinifies them in his beachtown winery.

“I think the natural acidity of Washington fruit is the game changer,” continued Rolle. “Up there we’re able to get more hang time without having to worry too much about getting raisins or losing all the acid. This allows for denser and more complex flavors to develop while still maintaining balance.”

The line-up at Gianni Buonomo Vintners also features wines under their second label, Gianni California. Grapes for these wines are sourced from the Sierra Foothills near Placerville, CA.

Another differentiator with this winery is the rare varietals they are using. Charbono, a darling of the Napa Valley in the early 1900s, is one of those rare varietals they produce. The other obscure varietal is Blaufränkisch. This is a medium-bodied varietal with Austrian ancestry.

“We are seeing younger wine drinkers pushing aside their parent’s Cabernet Sauvignon and taking ownership of these really exciting, relatively unknown wines.”
