San Diego Urban Winery Wins Gold in International Competition

Lofty Company for Small Ocean Beach Winery

San Diego CA – May 8, 2018 – “Winning a gold medal right next to Tuscan wine god Marchese Piero Antinori is really unbelievable, but it happened. That family has  been making wine for over 600 years. I’ve been making wine for a bit less than that,” beamed Keith Rolle winemaker of Gianni Buonomo Vintners.

The Hilton Head Island International Wine Competition played host to the event that brought in the heavy hitters from the international wine world. Wines were judged by Master Sommeliers, Advanced Sommeliers and Certified Wine Educators. Other notable gold winners included Rombauer Vineyards of Napa, Seghesio Family Vineyard of Sonoma and Tinazzi of Italy.

Gianni Buonomo Vintners was awarded a Gold Medal for their 2013 Blaufränkisch.

“Blaufränkisch has everything I expect from a world class wine with structure and depth of flavor,” explained Master Sommelier Jesse Becker of the Winebow Group and an Austrian wine expert. The Gianni Buonomo Blaufränkisch is true to the variety: medium-bodied, bright with distinctive notes of Bing cherry, wild strawberry and a hint of vanilla from aging in small oak barrels.

Blaufränkisch is mainly grown in Burgenland, the easternmost region of Austria on the Hungarian border.  Rolle sources his grapes from the Rattlesnake Hills AVA in Washington state and brings them to his winery at the beach to vinify, barrel age and blend.

In a land of Cabernet and Chardonnay it’s refreshing to experience a varietal that most have never heard of and fewer have ever tasted.  Rolle continues, “I’m trying to introduce an adventurous new varietal to the San Diego wine community. To be recognized with a gold medal with some of the most well-respected wineries in the world is truly an honor.”

Gianni Buonomo will be hosting a celebration event and the release of their 2014 vintage Blaufränkisch on Saturday, June 2 from 6:30 to 9:30. Traditional Austrian bites will also be served.
The ticketed event is open to the public.
